Darren's mom made a quick visit before she starts a new full-time job next week. We were so happy to have her here for a few days, and none of us could have been as happy as Lila was! Ever since she was born she has spent a great deal of time with her Grandma as I attended BYU. The two of them have a beautiful relationship that I hope can continue despite the distance.
Darren bought some super discounted tickets from work to Six Flags Fiesta Texas, so we gave Lila her second chance at an amusement park this year. She was much more willing to go on rides this time around, although still timid at times.
We went exploring downtown on Monday evening. The pictures below were taken on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol building. It was a great place to go because they had a parking structure across the road that was free for two hours and the capitol building itself is free to go tour on your own until as late as 10pm.
After the capitol building we went to the Capitol bridge where over one million bats live during the summer months. Every night at dusk they go out to hunt for their dinner (bugs!). I pulled up this image from Google, but this is what we saw. It was pretty cool! The bats are really small and they made this chirping sort of sound before they came out from under the bridge.
Yesterday afternoon was the sad part of Grandma's visit: she had to go home. As soon as she started walking towards the airport entrance and I began pulling aside from the curb, Lila burst into tears. It was heartbreaking for me to hear. And it was insulting of me to have offered her a Lifesaver to try and ease the pain (she didn't even acknowledge my offer). She cried and cried until she just gave up and went to sleep for the rest of the drive home.
While Debbie was here Lila was occupied by her instead of me, so I got to work on a small project. I took some diaper boxes and some fabric I had in my stash and made a couple fabric covered bins.
It ended up taking me an hour to cover them, but considering my only new purchase for the project was some spray on adhesive, I thought the project was worth it. I generally followed a tutorial that can be found here, but I did have to make some modifications since I was using a one-way fabric. My fabric also wasn't opaque enough, so I first glued some regular white paper over the diaper writing and images on the boxes and that solved the problem.
