Film review: Big Hero 6

We had a rainy day this week, so we thought it was the perfect time to use the movie tickets we received as a door prize at our neighborhood holiday party.  The kids had been asking to see Big Hero 6, so off to the matinee we went.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how unexpected and enjoyable I found the movie.  Kids movies usually go one of two ways: the adults enjoy it, or the adults hate it.  I was very happy that this movie surpassed my expectations.  The early previews I saw for the film were not engaging for me.  I really felt that I wouldn't be emotionally engaged in the movie with a marshmallow-looking, expressionless robot.

I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the movie really did tug at my heart strings.  Disney does it again, yet I was surprised this time around!  Maybe it's just because I'm really not a superhero fan. Seriously.  Last week I fell asleep to Guardians of the Galaxy because I find superheroes to be a total snooze. Sorry to anyone out there that liked that movie, but I have to kindly disagree about what it takes for a film to be enjoyable.

Anyway, back to Big Hero 6.  I really liked that the film was painting the sciences and college as cool things to do.  They also had some scenes where they showed strong female roles, and I really appreciate that Disney has been making an effort on this front over the last few years. Girl power!

The villain was actually kind of scary looking, but my kids handled the tense scenes really well.  I really appreciated that the violence that you expect from superhero movies wasn't really present here. I mean, there was a couple fight scenes, but it was different.  There was no real harm to any of the characters, and there weren't any guns.  I have to say, as a mother who is against guns, I really appreciated that a superhero movie aimed at young viewers did not have any guns.

I hope Disney continues to raise the bar and push the limits with the family films they make.  I would definitely recommend this movie and I actually look forward to seeing it again when it undoubtedly makes it's way to our Blu-ray player in a few months.

Lila is 2!!

Where did the time go? My baby is two and not really a baby at all. We love her to pieces and can't imagine life without her. She continues to learn things quickly and is already starting to read. Just kidding!! Just wanted to see if you were reading my post. Lila loves to learn, but she's not a genius (sorry sweetie--your genes aren't that good!). Lately she's been learning the sounds the letters make (she learned the alphabet at 16 mos.) and by sight she recognizes the words "cat", "dog", "Mom", "Dad", and "Lila." She knows all the colors (although her colorblindness sometimes gets her mixed up on red and green...those darn genes again!), shapes, and numbers 1-15. She enjoys singing, playing the "I Spy" game, running, climbing, going to nursery on Sunday, bike rides, looking at books, and going to the library.
